Greek Regional Airports: A Gateway to Summer Getaways
As the sun begins to shine brighter and the days grow longer, the aviation industry gears up for the summer rush. It's that time of year when airlines unveil their seasonal flight plans, and Greek regional airports are at the forefront of this bustling travel scene. With the summer season just around the corner, these airports are set to become bustling hubs, connecting Greece to a myriad of destinations across Europe and beyond.
Thessaloniki's Rising Star
Thessaloniki's Makedonia Airport is a shining example of this trend. Aegean Airlines has placed its trust in the city by expanding its network. From June 1 to September 28, passengers can enjoy a new direct connection to Dubrovnik, with two weekly flights. And that's not all; from June 16 to September 19, new routes to Milos and Zakynthos will also be available. For those planning ahead, the Thessaloniki-Prague and Thessaloniki-Warsaw routes are already included in the summer schedule, ensuring convenient travel options year-round.
Sky Express is also making waves with the introduction of the Thessaloniki-Dusseldorf route, which operates year-round, three times a week. This expansion showcases the airport's commitment to providing diverse travel options for its passengers.
Northern Connections
Makedonia Airport's connectivity is set to improve further with the addition of a direct route to Helsinki, thanks to Finnair's decision to serve this route from early May. This development will open up new possibilities for travelers seeking to explore the Nordic region.
EasyJet is also expanding its footprint in northern Greece, adding flights from Amsterdam and Bristol to Thessaloniki. This move will undoubtedly boost the city's tourism industry and provide more travel options for visitors.
European Expansion
The flight landscape is further enhanced by the expansion of Jet2's network between Britain and Crete. New connections to Hania will be introduced, capitalizing on the steady demand from British travelers. Corendon Airlines Europe is also making its mark with direct flights from Iraklio to Katowice and Warsaw, twice a week during the summer season. This confirms the growing popularity of Greek destinations among the Polish market.
International Connections
Ryanair is adding to the mix by introducing new connections from Bournemouth to Hania and Rhodes. Air Serbia is linking Belgrade with Santorini, while Bluebird Airways is strengthening its connectivity with Israel, offering flights from Tel Aviv to Santorini and Thessaloniki. These international connections showcase the diverse range of destinations accessible from Greek regional airports.
Passenger Traffic on the Rise
The popularity of these regional airports is evident in the passenger traffic figures. Last month, the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport welcomed 718,000 passengers, an impressive 8.1% increase compared to January 2025. Domestic travel saw a significant boost, with 441,786 passengers (+10.4%), while international travel also grew, attracting 276,022 passengers (+4.6%).
