Melbourne neurologist Professor Helmut Butzkueven has been honored with the 2025 MS Research Award by MS Australia, recognizing his two decades of leadership in improving MS care and advancing research. Based at Monash University and Alfred Health, Professor Butzkueven's work has significantly impacted MS research and clinical practice globally. He is the co-founder and Managing Director of MSBase, the world's largest MS registry, containing over 125,000 patient records from 50 countries. His motivation stems from directly caring for MS patients, addressing their unmet needs, and tackling the biggest challenges in the field. Professor Butzkueven's early career choice in neurology was driven by a passion for understanding the brain and the immune system, particularly in the context of MS. Through MSBase, he has contributed to evidence-based treatment guidelines, real-world evidence enhancement, and a deeper understanding of MS progression. Additionally, he leads international drug safety initiatives, ensuring high-quality care for MS patients. The MS Australia Award holds special significance for Professor Butzkueven, as the organization is globally respected for its advocacy and research funding. MS Australia CEO Rohan Greenland praised Professor Butzkueven's lasting impact on MS research and treatment, highlighting his leadership in establishing MSBase and transforming clinical care for tens of thousands of patients.
